Flags from the Gulf Stream Drift Mission
Category: Awards, Medals, Medallions and Commemorative Pieces

These three flags, mounted on a wooden base with a Gulf Stream Drift Mission commemorative medallion, represent the three nations involved in the creation of the submersible BEN FRANKLIN (PX-15) and its historic 1969 mission, a 30-day drift dive in the Gulf Stream. Switzerland's Bureau Piccard designed and built the submersible; the project was funded and completed by Grumman in the United States, and the crew on board the craft included Americans, Swiss, and one British member. These flags sat on the desk of Walter Muench, Grumman's project manager for the BEN FRANKLIN mission, and were donated by Mr Muench to the Vancouver Maritime Museum during the reunion of the BEN FRANKLIN team in Vancouver in 2002.
