Who are we?
We are Canada's principal maritime museum on the Pacific, located in the heart of Canada's greatest ports at the gateway to the Pacific Rim. For 45 years, we have been Pacific Canada's premier link to maritime history, art, culture, industry and technology.
We do our job best when visitors of all ages have fun while learning. We believe in families. We believe that anyone and everyone can continue to learn throughout their life. And we believe in making stories come alive through using artifacts - the real thing not, make-believe set.
We are a favourite with children and with their parents and grandparents. We are a popular destination for both local and residents and tourists. Each year, more than 100,000 people visit the Vancouver Maritime Museum. Most of our visitors are families from the Lower mainland. During the months of May to October, the Maritime Museum is a popular destination for tourists curious about the maritime history of Canada. In addition, thousands of students participate in guided education programs and we are a popular destination for community groups.
Education
Education is the cornerstone of the Maritime Museum. Our programs instil a sense of adventure and excitement about the maritime world and are designed for school children, the general public who visit us, and people who attend our workshops, interactive programs and lectures. The Museum is a valuable resource for researchers; our collections, archives and library are available to the public as is our expert staff.
Preservation
We protect the irreplaceable for future generations and conserve the thousands of artifacts entrusted to our care. We also strive to preserve the stories that link the artifacts to real people and their experiences.
Inspiration
The Maritime Museum is a magical place that inspires all ages, landlubbers and old salts alike, where the young and young at heart thrill to our many exhibits and the adventures within our galleries. We inspire all to be life-long learners and everyone who enters our world gains a deeper understanding of how people respond to and interact with the sea.
What is our Mission?
To be Canada's premier destination to explore and understand our interaction with the sea.
