FAQ
How do I borrow a book from the Library?
The Library is a reference library; all materials must stay within the building. However, we will find you a comfortable place to read.

When can I visit the Library?
The library is open Tuesday and Wednesday 10 am to 4 pm. Please contact the Librarian to make an appointment.

Will the Library staff look up the information I need?
We will conduct simple and direct research. This is often done with the assistance of volunteers and is done on a first come basis. For more detailed requests, you are encouraged to visit the library and use the vast collection of books, manuscripts, and ephemera material available.

I have some books I would like to donate to the Library, do you accept donations?
The Library's collection and status as a premier research facility is due in large part to the generous donations of others. All donations are assessed according to condition, relevancy, and duplication with the existing collection. For any items not added to the collection, we try to find them a new home, or sell them to a book dealer. Proceeds are then put back into the library.

Are there any fees for this service?
Yes, there are fees associated with the reproduction of textual materials and photographs. Some restrictions on copying apply to sensitive and rare materials. Please refer to the Schedule of Fees for Reproduction Services <PDF link here> for an outline of fees.

Can the Vancouver Maritime Museum help provide proof of Merchant Marine Service?
Many Merchant Mariners have been able to obtain pensions from the information found in our Register of Seaman Shipped. Send us the name of the mariner, and the name of the vessel he served on, and we will check our records.

FAQ

Did you know?
That Captain George Vancouver was an experienced, sailor, explorer, navigator and cartographer who mapped the coastline of British Columbia in 1792. In several voyages between 1791 and 1795, Captain Vancouver charted for the first time the rugged coastline of what is today Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. So thorough were his charts, that mariners used them for well over a hundred years. One of the world’s great mariners, George Vancouver was born in King’s Lynn, UK on June 22, 1757. Although the British Navy Captain’s life ended in obscurity when he died in 1798, the city that bears his name will recognize his remarkable achievements.
