How is the Maritime Museum Funded?
The Vancouver Maritime Museum Society, a non-profit, charitable and educational association, operates the Vancouver Maritime Museum through a lease/grant from the City of Vancouver. While the City owns the assets, the Museum is not a government institution. In fact, government support for the Museum, like that of other museums in Canada, has declined dramatically in the last decade. To make up the difference - to save treasures, mount exhibitions, provide public and school programs, and serve the needs of the community, the Maritime Museum raises funds for its operations from a variety of sources. Grants from provincial and municipal government account for less than half of the budget with the balance generated through memberships, admissions, sponsorships, investments, rentals, and donations.
How can you help the Vancouver Maritime Museum?
There are a number of ways you can support the Maritime Museum and help secure its future. The Vancouver Maritime Museum will recognize your gift in a way that meets your individual needs. Your gift will go the program of your choice or to programs with the greatest need. Your support will give us the tools to advance in new directions while staying true to our mandate. We welcome planned giving and living legacy giving.
What do we need money for?
Your donations mean that the Museum continues to save the treasures and legacies of past generations for future generations to be inspired by, and to learn from. Your donations provide the means to:
- collect and preserve our maritime heritage
- provide public access to our heritage through displays and exhibitions
- provide educational programs to children and adults
- conduct research into our maritime heritage.
You can chose to make a general donation to support the work of the Vancouver Maritime Museum, or you can select a specific area or activity that you wish to support:
